How did Rome become one of the richest and most economically powerful empires of the ancient world?
The answer was not simply gold, conquest, or trade. Rome built an enormous economic system that connected land, labor, taxation, mining, agriculture, roads, ports, merchants, military power, and long-distance trade across the Roman Empire.
In this documentary, we explore how the Roman economy actually worked — from the farms and mines that produced wealth to the roads and ships that moved it, and the taxation and administration that connected distant provinces to Rome.
We follow the economic rise of Rome through:
• Roman agriculture and the importance of grain
• The economic impact of Roman conquest
• Provincial taxation and imperial administration
• Slavery and forced labor in the Roman economy
• Gold, silver, copper, lead and Roman mining
• Roman roads, ports and Mediterranean trade
• Egypt and its role as an economic crossroads
• Trade between Rome, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean
• Roman coins and the ancient monetary system
• The Roman army and its economic role
• Wealth inequality in the Roman Empire
• The economic importance of Rome itself
• How distant provinces became part of one interconnected system
• Why the Roman economy was powerful — and why it was also vulnerable
Rome did not simply conquer territories. It learned how to connect the resources of those territories to an enormous political and economic network.
A field in Egypt. A mine in Spain. A port on the Red Sea. A merchant ship in the Indian Ocean. A road through Gaul. A marketplace in Rome.
Together, these were parts of the same system.
This documentary explores how that system transformed Rome from a city on the Tiber into the center of one of the ancient world's largest and most economically integrated empires.
The wealth of Rome was real — but it came from somewhere, and from someone.
