Why do some players leave Liverpool looking like world-class stars, only to struggle to recreate their best football elsewhere? Is it a coincidence, or does Liverpool's system bring out qualities that disappear when players move on?
In this video, we investigate five former Liverpool players whose careers took very different turns after leaving Anfield: Michael Owen, Fernando Torres, Philippe Coutinho, Naby Keïta, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
🔴 MICHAEL OWEN: From winning the Ballon d'Or at Liverpool to joining Real Madrid, Owen's story challenges the idea that every former Liverpool player who moves on has failed. Injuries robbed him of some of the explosive pace that made him special, but his career after Anfield still included major achievements.
🔴 FERNANDO TORRES: His incredible partnership with Steven Gerrard made him one of the Premier League's most feared strikers. But injuries had already begun affecting him before his move to Chelsea. Was it the wrong club, the wrong timing, or a player who was no longer quite the same?
🔴 PHILIPPE COUTINHO: Liverpool's Little Magician thrived in a system that gave him freedom to create, drift inside, and dictate attacks. Barcelona paid an enormous fee for him, but fitting into a team already built around Lionel Messi proved difficult. What changed when he left Anfield?
🔴 NABY KEÏTA: One of Liverpool's most anticipated midfield signings never consistently delivered the performances fans expected. Was his story about failing to adapt after leaving, or were injuries and availability problems already holding him back at Liverpool?
🔴 TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD: Perhaps the most complicated case of all. Jürgen Klopp built a system that maximised Trent's extraordinary passing and creativity while helping the team manage his defensive limitations. Can he reproduce that influence away from the environment that made him so effective?
These five stories reveal three very different explanations for what happens after a Liverpool departure: physical decline, a change of tactical environment, and problems that were already present before the player left.
But this isn't about claiming that Liverpool puts a curse on its former players. Luis Suárez, Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano, and Raheem Sterling all enjoyed significant success after leaving. The real question is whether certain players need the right system, teammates, and tactical freedom to reach their full potential.
Did Liverpool make these players better, or did they leave behind the very things that made them successful?
This is Part 1, and there are plenty more former Liverpool players whose post-Anfield careers deserve a closer look.
