Every Interstate shield carries a hidden code: odd numbers run north to south, even numbers run east to west, and in most states the exit number is the mile. This film decodes that grid, traces the 1956 plan that paid for it, and shows where the code breaks, from the missing I-50 to the cities the highways cut through.
