The closing concert of the Black Musics series explores the griot tradition of West Africa, particularly amongst the Mandinka people of Senegal, The Gambia and Guinea. In the Mandinka, Bambara and Wolof languages, these songs preserve the history and values of a community, passed down by musicians and storytellers. The word ‘jalikunda’ refers to the home where griots recount and sing tales from this collective memory, forged without a known author through the oral tradition.
