Russia’s aviation industry has been working toward a major recovery, but the comeback is proving far more complicated and time-consuming than many expected. After years of disruption, Russia has been trying to strengthen its domestic aviation industry, expand aircraft production, develop indigenous engines, and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. But rebuilding a modern aviation ecosystem is not simply a matter of producing more aircraft. In this video, we examine Russia’s aviation recovery, the challenges facing its commercial aircraft industry, and why projects such as the MC-21, Superjet 100/New SJ-100, Il-114-300, and PD-14 engine are so important. What is slowing the recovery? Are aircraft production targets being pushed back? Why are engines, avionics, components, certification, supply chains, and industrial capacity such major challenges? And can Russia realistically build a large-scale domestic aviation industry capable of supporting its airlines over the long term? Russia has significant aerospace engineering experience and a long history of aircraft development. However, modern commercial aviation requires thousands of highly integrated components and a global industrial ecosystem.
