SLST 2 | Interview Special | Lecture 9 Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors | Important Results & Conceptual Interview Questions Welcome to *Lecture 9 of the SLST 2 Interview Special* series by **Maths Career+**. In this lecture, we explore the fundamental concepts of Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors from a conceptual point of view. We discuss why these ideas are defined for linear operators, why square matrices are important, and how eigenvalues are connected to characteristic polynomials and several important results in Linear Algebra. 🔹 *In this lecture, we discuss:* • Understanding linear operators and the basic concepts of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. • Why do we consider a linear operator T: V → V rather than a general linear transformation T: V → W when defining eigenvalues and eigenvectors? • Must every linear operator have an eigenvalue or an eigenvector? • Why must an eigenvector be non-zero? • Why are eigenvalues and eigenvectors usually defined for square matrices rather than rectangular matrices? • The characteristic polynomial of a linear operator and whether it depends on the choice of basis. • Can every monic polynomial of positive degree be the characteristic polynomial of some square matrix? • Do a square matrix A and its transpose Aᵀ have the same eigenvalues? Do they necessarily have the same eigenvectors? • If u and v are two eigenvectors of a matrix A, is u + v necessarily an eigenvector? • What can we conclude about eigenvalues and eigenvectors when the sum of the entries in each row of a square matrix is the same? • Important results connecting the product of eigenvalues with det(A) and the sum of eigenvalues with tr(A). • Characteristic polynomials of A⁻¹ and adj(A) when A is an invertible matrix. • Can every real number be an eigenvalue of a linear operator? • Does there exist a linear operator that has no eigenvalue? The main focus of this lecture is to develop a deeper conceptual understanding of Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors through important questions, follow-up questions, and fundamental results of Linear Algebra. *Same Concepts.
