Everyone knows her face. No one knows her name. Because she never had one. Around 1665, in Delft, Johannes Vermeer painted Girl with a Pearl Earring not as a portrait, but as a tronie: a face that belongs to no one. This is her story, from Vermeer's crowded house and a debt for bread, to a two-guilder auction, a secret will, and what scientists found inside the painting in 2018.
