America Is Building a Chip That Makes Blind People See

A person who has lost both eyes cannot see. Not in the dark, not in bright sun, not with the strongest glasses ever made. When the eye is gone, the road from the world to the brain is cut. Unless you skip the road entirely. That is what an American team is now attempting. A chip, thinner than a human hair, placed directly against the part of the brain that handles vision. It does not repair the eye. It does not need an eye at all. A tiny camera picks up the world outside, sends it to the chip, and the chip speaks straight to the brain in the only language the brain understands. The FDA has given it breakthrough status. The first patient is expected this year. At the start, what a person would see is not a face or a sunset. It is points of light. Shapes. Edges. Enough to know that a doorway is a doorway and that somebody just walked into the room. The engineers are open about that. They say it will look low-resolution at first, like an early video game, and get better as the technology improves.
