China is turning powered exoskeletons from expensive medical machines into affordable wearable technology—but can a $1,500 robotic suit really replace the wheelchair? In this video, we examine how Chinese companies such as Hypershell, Fourier Intelligence, RoboCT, ULS Robotics and MileBot Robotics are developing powered exoskeletons for walking assistance, rehabilitation, elderly care and outdoor mobility. We explain how sensors, electric motors, batteries and artificial intelligence work together to assist human movement—and why consumer exoskeletons are very different from medical systems developed by companies such as ReWalk Robotics and Ekso Bionics. These affordable devices could help older adults, rehabilitation patients and people with partial mobility walk farther with less effort. But limitations involving balance, paralysis, battery life, safety and medical certification mean wheelchairs are not disappearing anytime soon. The real breakthrough may be something even bigger: China’s manufacturing scale could transform wearable robotics into a mass-market industry.
