Dr. Marco Genovese, Research Director at Italy’s Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRiM) and head of its Quantum Optics and Photometry sector, presented a different way to confront one of quantum technology’s most persistent problems: noise and decoherence. Rather than relying only on error correction or control techniques, Genovese explored how repeated quantum measurements can be used both to characterize environmental noise and to protect quantum states from it. At Quantum World Congress 2026, Genovese explained the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects, experiments using single-photon polarization to probe correlated noise, and a newer protocol that transfers an unknown qubit into a less noise-sensitive degree of freedom so the original degree of freedom can be protected before the state is restored.
