World’s Largest Salt Flat | Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia 🇧🇴

Today, I’m exploring Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, the world’s largest salt flat—a place where a thin layer of water can turn the ground into an enormous mirror, reflecting the sky above! Located in southwestern Bolivia, South America, Salar de Uyuni stretches across more than 10,000 square kilometres on the Altiplano, the high plateau of the Andes. At roughly 3,650 metres above sea level, this vast white landscape has a very different setting from an ordinary desert. Its story began with prehistoric lakes. As these lakes gradually dried up, they left behind layers of salt, creating the enormous flat surface we see today. During wet conditions, shallow water spreads across the salt crust, producing the reflections that make Uyuni so famous. For an Indian comparison, think of Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch: wide-open horizons, white salt landscapes, and a dramatic transformation when water arrives. The big difference is their geographical setting. Kutch is a low-lying seasonal salt marsh near the Arabian Sea, while Uyuni sits thousands of metres higher in the Andes.
