At least eight other human species once existed alongside us. Now there's only one. So why are we the only human species left, and what actually happened to the rest?
In this video, we trace the real, separate stories behind five extinctions: Homo erectus, the longest-surviving human species ever, whose last known population held on in Java until roughly 108,000 years ago; the "hobbits" of Flores, wiped out by a multi-thousand-year drought according to a 2026 climate study; Homo luzonensis, a species we still can't even date the extinction of; and Neanderthals, whose disappearance a fresh April 2026 study traces not to intelligence or strength, but to how socially connected their populations were compared to ours. We also cover the newest discovery of all: at least two more extinct human lineages we only know existed because traces of their DNA are still inside us today.
It's human evolution explained through real studies, real dates, and real numbers, not guesswork.
