The review focused on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), live CCTV feeds and real-time operational data to strengthen railway operations, passenger safety and crowd management during the festive rush. The Railway War Room serves as a centralised monitoring and coordination facility, enabling officials to monitor railway stations through live CCTV feeds covering platforms, foot-over bridges and surrounding areas. Officials can simultaneously view multiple locations and zoom in on individual camera feeds for detailed monitoring and quicker assessment of emerging situations. During the review, the Railway Minister highlighted the extensive arrangements made by Indian Railways to manage the increased passenger movement during Diwali and Chhath. This year, more than 18,000 special trains are being operated, compared with around 12,000 special trains last year. The festive-season arrangements also include dedicated passenger holding areas at around 20 railway stations, additional ticket counters, multiple passenger-scanning facilities and approximately 700 AI-enabled cameras to strengthen surveillance and crowd monitoring. Preparations for the festive rush began nearly six months in advance, with special attention to managing the expected increase in passenger movement ahead of Chhath. AI-Based Monitoring and Real-Time Train Tracking The War Room uses AI-based tools to analyse activities and incidents at specific locations through prompt-driven systems, helping officials assess situations and respond promptly. Real-time operational data also enables railway authorities to track train movements and delays, identify disruptions and take corrective measures to improve punctuality. The integrated monitoring system reflects Indian Railways' increasing use of technology for operational coordination, passenger safety and efficient management of railway stations during peak travel periods.
