Seafloor spreading in 3D The video is also available for download at: https://earthref.org/ERDA/2786/ and can be referenced with the doi: 10.7288/V4/ERDA/2786 Title: Seafloor spreading in 3D Author: Anthony Morris from the University of Plymouth, UK Seafloor spreading is a fundamental Earth process, responsible for creating about two-thirds of our planet’s crust. The large-scale tectonic and magmatic processes at spreading ridges have been recognized for decades, largely through geophysical investigations. To fully understand seafloor spreading, however, we need to connect these large-scale observations with detailed, interdisciplinary studies of oceanic crustal rocks at the grain-scale. Of particular interest are rocks from the lower oceanic crust, where the key magmatic activity occurs during spreading. In this talk, I will present results of magnetic fabric analyses of deep oceanic crustal rocks collected from the Oman ophiolite that reveal a complete 3D picture of magma flow along an entire fast spreading ridge segment for the first time, providing insights into the magmatic processes at the heart of seafloor spreading. ----------------------------------------------------------- 00:00 - Intro 00:17 - Presentation 34:23 - Questions 39:52 - Announcements
