Would you recognize an ethical issue in a coaching session before it became a problem?
Some ethical situations are obvious. Others start as a normal conversation, a client question, a request from a third party, or a moment where something just feels a little unclear.
That’s the gray area.
In this Coaching Lab, Talie Davis brings coaches into a real situation that came up during a Certified Coaching Academy mentor call.
A seemingly casual conversation becomes more personal. Coaching skills enter the conversation even though there was no formal coaching agreement. Sensitive information is shared. And the coach is suddenly left wondering what responsibility he has to the person who trusted him with that information.
Does confidentiality apply?
Does it matter that this wasn’t technically a coaching session?
Is there a responsibility to tell someone else?
What other options are available?
Instead of jumping straight to an answer, Talie pauses the scenario along the way and asks the coaches in the room what they’re noticing.
And they don’t all notice the same things.
That opens up a much bigger conversation about what ethical coaching actually looks like when the situation in front of you doesn’t fit neatly into a textbook example.
Throughout the Lab, the group explores:
• Coaching confidentiality and when it can become complicated
• Coaching without a formal agreement or contract
• Boundaries and multiple roles
• Scope of practice
• When a client may need support beyond coaching
• How to make a thoughtful referral
• Client autonomy and responsibility
• Confidentiality when an employer or organization is paying for coaching
• Requests for information from spouses, employers, sponsors, and other third parties
• The importance of clear coaching agreements
• Using the ICF Code of Ethics and professional standards when you’re unsure what to do
• The value of getting another coach’s perspective when you’re navigating a difficult situation
One of the biggest takeaways from this Coaching Lab is that ethical coaching isn’t about memorizing the answer to every situation you could possibly encounter.
A big part of it is learning to notice when something deserves a closer look.
Can you recognize when a boundary is getting blurry?
Can you hear when a conversation may be moving beyond your scope?
Can you recognize when confidentiality needs to be clarified?
Can you notice when your role or responsibility isn’t as clear as you thought it was?
Sometimes the first step is simply recognizing:
“There’s something here I need to think about.”
From there, you can slow down, ask more questions, revisit the coaching agreement, consult the ICF Code of Ethics, seek additional support, or explore other options with your client.
That kind of awareness develops through practice, real conversations, feedback, and hearing what other coaches notice that you may have missed.
