Every day, space dust lands on your roof. In 2029, a rock the size of the Eiffel Tower will fly closer to Earth than our TV satellites. And one rock, taller than Mount Everest, ended the age of the dinosaurs.
In this video we go through every type of space rock and rate each one on the Torino scale, the real 0-to-10 danger scale astronomers use for asteroid impacts. It starts with the dust in your roof gutter, shooting stars, and the meteorite that crashed through a woman's roof in Alabama in 1954. Then come the Chelyabinsk fireball, Tunguska and the "city killer" asteroid 2024 YR4, the rubble pile Bennu, the near miss Apophis and the metal asteroid Psyche. Further out are comets, centaurs and the interstellar visitor 3I/ATLAS. It ends with the rock that hit Mexico 66 million years ago: the dinosaur killer.
Every number in this video is checked against the sources below. The Torino ratings for Tunguska (8) and the dinosaur killer (10) are what the scale's own definitions give for a certain impact of that size. Comparisons like "London to New York in a minute and a half" are our own rounded calculations from published values.
