Home Assistant 2026.9 - Now You Can See WHY It Happened!

Home Assistant 2026.9 Beta has now been released, bringing a new Matter network map, much more useful Activity information, active alerts for the Security dashboard and several improvements designed to make troubleshooting your smart home easier. One of the biggest changes in the September 2026 release is the new Matter network visualisation. This provides a clearer view of your Matter and Thread network, including how devices are connected and which Thread border routers they can see. Home Assistant’s Activity panel can now provide far more information about why something happened. Instead of simply showing that a light turned on or an entity changed state, the new details can reveal the automation, action or event responsible for that change. History also gains new filtering options, making it easier to investigate specific devices and entities. The Security dashboard continues to develop with active alerts and favourites, while new tile card features provide additional controls for several types of device. Home Assistant is also laying the groundwork for easier Modbus configuration through the user interface. Troubleshooting hardware should become easier too. A new Serial panel provides more useful information about connected USB and serial devices, while network-storage monitoring can now distinguish between storage that has become unavailable and storage that has intentionally been disconnected. As always, there’s a substantial collection of new integrations and updates to existing ones. The Matter network map should also help users understand their Matter and Thread infrastructure, while the new serial-device information could prove useful when troubleshooting Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread and other USB coordinators.
