Mozu-Umemachi’s Futon-Daiko is one of the most historically significant and visually stunning portable shrines (Taiko floats) carried during the famous Tsukimi Matsuri (Moon-Viewing Festival) at Mozu Hachiman Shrine in Sakai City.1. A Proud History of Over 110 YearsThe Umemachi float has a deep historical legacy that dates back more than a century.The Origin: Umemachi acquired this traditional float from another district (Minami-Hatago-cho) in 1913 (Taisho 2).110+ Year Legacy: Having celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013, the float now has 113 years of history as of 2026. It is highly revered as a cultural treasure passed down through generations.2. Exquisite Macassar Ebony (Shima-Kokutan) CarvingsThe defining artistic feature of the Umemachi float is its extensive use of Macassar Ebony (Shima-Kokutan), an extremely rare, dense, and premium hardwood.Deep Masterpiece Carvings: The naturally rich, dark-striped grain of the ebony adds an incredible depth and presence to the intricate warrior sculptures (musha-shokoku) carved into the float's wooden frame.The 2026 Restoration: To preserve this masterpiece for the next century, a major restoration project was completed in 2026. This meticulous process revitalized the decades-old ebony carvings and ornate metalwork to their original, breathtaking glory.3. The Two Distinct Traditions of "Futon-Shime"Unlike most floats that keep a single design, Umemachi alternates between two distinct styles of Futon-Shime (the decorative ropes/bindings around the heavy red cushions), depending on the festival year Ameblo:The Dragon Style: Features magnificent embroidered gold dragons coupled with the town's traditional, simple "Plum Blossom" (Ume) crest.The Gold Rope Style: Features thick, elegant golden ropes paired with a unique crest showcasing the plum blossom surrounded by laurel leaves (symbolizing victory and glory).4. Powerful Festival PerformanceWeighing around 2 tons and standing 4 meters tall, the float is carried entirely on the shoulders of the local youth. To the powerful, rhythmic chant of "Bera, Bera, Berashosshoi!", the bearers display immense strength, especially when carrying the massive float up the stone steps of Mozu Hachiman Shrine during the highlight Miyairi (shrine entrance) ritual.
