Vaishnava Jana To | Gandhi Jayanti Special | Lata Mangeshkar | Ruby Banerjee Cover

A humble musical tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti. October 2nd marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the most influential leaders of India's freedom movement, remembered for his ideals of Truth, Non-violence, simplicity, compassion and humanity. On this special occasion, I tried to sing “Vaishnava Jana To”, the timeless Gujarati bhajan written in the 15th century by saint-poet Narsinh Mehta. The bhajan beautifully describes the qualities of a truly compassionate human being—someone who feels the pain of others, helps those in distress, respects everyone and remains free from pride. The song became especially associated with Mahatma Gandhi, as it was one of his favourite bhajans and was regularly sung at his prayer gatherings. Its message of compassion, service and equality deeply reflected the values that Gandhi emphasized throughout his life. Inspired by the beloved rendition associated with Lata Mangeshkar, I made this humble attempt to present the song in my own voice.
