The current target Simulacrum Ensemble is Robin Amos and Eric Woods on synthesis, Jonathan LaMaster on violin, electric sitar and other strings, PEK, Michael Caglianone and John Fugarino on horns, and Michael Knoblach on percussion. Robin and Jonathan played together in the seminal Boston post-rock band Cul-De-Sac for over a decade, and Michael Knoblach played with them in that band for a year or two. This edition is centered on the core unit of the Cul-De-Sac veterans plus PEK. All seven performers on Counterparts & Doppelgängers have played on some of the 22 Simulacrum albums, but this is the first time we have had this full septet lineup.
Since Bob moved to Maine, I have been trying to land on a stable target ensemble for Simulacrum. I have had this unit in mind for some time and tried to get it together before, but failed due to scheduling issues… It’s OK, because a section of this band is still a very capable improvisation unit, but I really wanted to hear this Septet together. Improvisation is generally very tolerant of changes to the lineup, unlike repertoire music where the absence of a band member can doom a performance or at the very least require a sub that knows the book. In the past, I have credited recordings to Simulacrum when the ensemble size was as small as 4 performers.
Robin and Eric make an amazing electronics section – they were on one of the previous albums together. They are joined for portions of the performance by me, Michael C, John and Jonathan on the Evil Clown Electronics gear permanently installed in the ECH studio. Jonathan is always amazing in any context I get him here for. PEK, John and Michael C are my star horn front line, and Michael K is our star percussionist. All these musicians are Evil Clown regulars and have performed many times at Evil Clown Headquarters with the broad palate improvisation aesthetic we espouse. Everyone listens, and the Dynamics and Density of the work undergo as much transformation as the Sonority. Of course, this is the challenge as ensemble size grows: Enormous power is available, but held in reserve and used judiciously, so the climaxes are built to and receded from as the work develops organically over the duration through vastly different sound-spaces.
This performance was so successful that I was immediately able to get everyone to commit to the next session in only 2 months at the beginning of December. I was excited to finally get the full target Simulacrum ensemble all in the same room for a performance, and I am looking forward to more sets from this Septet Edition of Evil Clown’s premiere electronics-focused ensemble.
