I found out that the biggest gathering of Scottish clans in the world isn't in Scotland. It's hiding in the mountains of North Carolina. A British couple accidentally drove into the Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain, and I watched strangers hand them moonshine, teach them mountain games, put them in kilts, and end with them sleeping in an RV with people they'd met hours earlier. 70 years of Appalachian hospitality, bagpipes, haggis (illegal in the US because of the lung thing), and a "necklace of shame."
