Starting a new job can make even competent people suddenly feel like they have no idea what they’re doing.
You don't understand half the terminology. You’re worried about asking stupid questions. You feel pressure to prove that the company made the right decision hiring you. And every slightly awkward interaction starts feeling like evidence that you don’t belong.
Most of this is not about your ability. It comes from predictable psychological patterns that become sharply powerful when we enter an unfamiliar environment.
In this video, I break down 3 psychological traps that can make your first week at a new job much harder than it needs to be:
1. The Spotlight Effect -
We tend to overestimate how much other people notice our mistakes and knowledge gaps. At a new job, this can make us pretend to understand things instead of simply asking questions.
2. Impostor Syndrome -
The fear that people will eventually discover we aren’t as capable as they think. This can push us to overcommit, volunteer for everything, and try to prove our value before we even understand what the team values.
3. Belonging Uncertainty -
When we enter a new group, ambiguous social situations can feel much more meaningful than they really are. A short Slack response or an awkward meeting can suddenly make us wonder whether we belong.
I’ll also share practical ways to deal with each one, including the 24-hour clarification rule, switching from performance goals to learning goals, and using small conversations to build genuine relationships.
