Beyond Expertise: The AI Technique That Breaks Your Skill Ceiling

Vibe coding moved the floor. People who have never written a line of code are shipping working software, and a lot of what used to make developers valuable is now table stakes. So the question for anyone who already knows how to build: what are you actually doing with AI? Most of us are using it to build the same things, slightly faster, comfortably inside our existing skill set. However, that's a productivity gain - it's not a shift in what's possible. Ross Morsali, creator of Search & Filter, has been pushing in a different direction. He uses AI deep research to work on problems he has no training in, and it's producing real output. His team rewrote Search & Filter's indexing system, the most complex part of the plugin, by researching how indexing and search work at scale outside WordPress, at Amazon, Netflix, and Elasticsearch. Then it gets stranger. Using the same technique, Ross has built a working prototype of a speech-to-text system designed for accents, speech impairments, and language learners with imperfect pronunciation. It requires him to build and fine-tune his own LLM, which he had no idea how to do. He now has a government grant application in hand for GPU resources to train it.
