Marche hongroise Recorded 16 April 1942 Matrices: 026409/11 First issued on Telefunken SK 3243/4 Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam conducted by Willem Mengelberg Producer and restoration engineer: Mark Obert-Thorn These three selections were recorded at the Concertgebouw during one of Mengelberg’s finest-sounding Telefunken sessions. The matrix sequence confirms the order presented here, although Mengelberg reversed the first two pieces when he returned to the music in a concert broadcast eleven months later. The concluding Marche hongroise is given complete, unlike the abbreviated version Mengelberg had recorded for Columbia in 1926. The original Telefunken 78s also preserve some of the best recorded sound achieved during his wartime sessions with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and have been newly transferred and restored for this release. PASC776 concludes Pristine Classical’s six-volume survey of Mengelberg’s complete Telefunken recordings with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, covering sessions from 1937 to 1943.
