What happened to the people who followed the Romanovs into exile?
On the night of July 16th, 1918, four people who weren't Romanovs died in the Ipatiev House basement: the court physician Yevgeny Botkin, the maid Anna Demidova, the footman Alexei Trupp and the cook Ivan Kharitonov. They were the last of a whole household. This documentary follows them all. Anna Vyrubova's months in the Peter and Paul Fortress, the sorting on the Yekaterinburg platform, the sailor Nagorny, Prince Dolgorukov and Count Tatishchev shot in a pit, the nun Varvara Yakovleva thrown into the Alapayevsk mine, the valet Alexei Volkov running from his own execution at Perm, and the tutors Pierre Gilliard and Sydney Gibbes, who spent the rest of their lives keeping the family close.
