My Parents Cashed the Bonds Grandpa Bought Me in 1994—Then the Bank Pulled the Signature Card
Her grandfather bought her a bond every payday for seven years, and the only proof left was a card a nine-year-old had signed in pencil.
📝 Jolene Marsh has cleaned teeth in Chillicothe, Missouri for nineteen years, six inches from people's faces, not saying what she thinks. From 1994 to 2001 her grandfather, a railroad man, bought her a hundred-dollar savings bond every other Friday. One hundred and eighty-two of them, in a cigar box in her closet. In the fall of 2002 her mother moved the box to the family safe and cashed every bond, signing as the parent of a minor. The money became her brother's truck. Jolene found out in 2015, from a letter she never showed anyone. Her mother said the bonds had put a roof on the house. She said okay. In 2026 the bank closes its Locust Street branch and writes to every box holder. One letter has Jolene's name on it. Her mother opens it and calls the box Daddy's. At the counter, the manager asks which one of them is Jolene, goes to the file room, and comes back with a card from 1994 nobody in the family knew existed. If you like slow family stories where a quiet man wrote it all down and paid the rent eighteen years ahead, this one is for you.
