Inside a Detroit Autoworker's House in 1965 — Room by Room.
Saturday, the 2nd of October, 1965. Quarter past six in the morning, on a street of brick bungalows set twelve feet apart, with the porch lights still on all the way down the block. Somewhere two streets over, a bus goes past on the hour. The sky over the east end of the city has the color in it that comes off a stack, and everybody on this street knows which stack it is.
On the kitchen counter, by the door to the side porch, there is a black metal lunch bucket with a domed lid and a thermos clipped inside it. It was packed last night. It has been packed every night in this house for nineteen years.
This was the house that the best job in America paid for. Two bedrooms up under the roof, one down, a front porch, a basement, a garage off the alley, and a man at the plant who could buy all of it on one paycheck.
We are going to walk through it in the order you would actually have walked through it, starting on the front steps and finishing in the alley. We are not skipping a room.
