How did motorcycle production move from established manufacturing countries to the giant factories of Asia? Travel from 1960 to 2026 and watch Japan, China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and many other countries rise, fall, and compete in this animated bar chart race.
Japan begins the timeline as a major producer. Its domestic factories reached more than seven million motorcycles in 1981, before production networks increasingly shifted to other Asian countries. China expanded rapidly during the 1990s and 2000s, while India built one of the largest two-wheeler industries on Earth. The 2024 global motorcycle production comparison published by Abraciclo places India first, China second, and Indonesia third. Brazil, Vietnam, Thailand and other producers also feature in the story.
Our measure is estimated annualized motorcycle and scooter production in units per year. The display advances monthly, but most months are modeled interpolations between annual benchmarks, not measured monthly factory output. Early rankings are substantially reconstructed from incomplete archives. India’s fiscal-year statistics and national differences in coverage can affect comparability. Figures for 2026 are projections, not final confirmed totals.
Which country surprised you most, and which will lead by 2030?
