The lost Maya city of Valeriana was hiding under a farmed field in Campeche, Mexico — found not by machete but on a laptop. In 2013 a plane LiDAR-scanned 122 sq km of jungle to measure carbon; in 2024 Tulane student Luke Auld-Thomas reprocessed the file and revealed pyramids, reservoirs and thousands of houses for 30,000 people. The film traces why archaeologists missed it for 50 years, how LiDAR peels the trees away, and why Valeriana rewrites how many Maya the lowlands could support.
