🌲 WE HAD TO LEAVE TACKEROO! | Cannock Chase Motorhome Camping We’re back at Tackeroo Campsite on Cannock Chase, one of the most unusual places we’ve stayed in our motorhome. Surrounded by woodland, wildlife and miles of Cannock Chase scenery, Tackeroo feels like proper back-to-basics camping. But this visit didn’t quite go to plan… something happened and we HAD TO LEAVE! 😳 Watch the video to find out why. Tackeroo is a simple forest campsite near Rugeley in Staffordshire, with hardstanding pitches, running water and waste-disposal facilities. It’s managed on behalf of Forestry England and sits right on the edge of Cannock Chase Forest 🏕️ The fascinating history of Tackeroo Cannock Chase has an incredible military past. During the First World War, two huge military camps were established here at Rugeley Camp and Brocton Camp. The camps were designed to accommodate around 40,000 soldiers, and Forestry England says more than 500,000 soldiers trained on Cannock Chase before the war ended in 1918 In 1915, a railway was constructed to supply the military camps. It became known as the Tackeroo Railway, with the trains sometimes referred to as the Tackeroo Express. The railway brought supplies, equipment and coal into the camps, and parts of its old route can still be traced around Cannock Chase today. Cannock Chase was also used for military purposes during the Second World War, adding even more history to this beautiful part of Staffordshire.
