The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York in 214 crates in 1885, and the money for her pedestal had run out. How she got built, for the 140th anniversary of her dedication on October 28, 1886.
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France, and the deal was that the French would pay for the statue and the Americans would pay for the pedestal. This video covers the French idea behind her (and why a 2000 National Park Service report called the 1865 dinner party story a legend), how the sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and the engineer Gustave Eiffel designed her, how the pedestal money ran out, the New York World's appeal to ordinary readers, the rainy dedication on Thursday, October 28, 1886, and how her meaning changed over the years that followed.
