You’ll learn how increased PaCO₂ leads to CSF acidification, triggering a powerful increase in ventilation to restore homeostasis. The lecture then covers the peripheral chemoreceptors, located in the carotid bodies and aortic bodies, which are sensitive to low oxygen (PaO₂), high CO₂, and decreased arterial pH. We explain how these receptors send rapid signals via the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves to the respiratory centers, especially during acute hypoxemia or metabolic acidosis.
