Germany Made Its Last WWI Reparations Payment in 2010 — 92 Years After the War Ended
On October 3, 2010, the twentieth anniversary of German reunification, Germany sent a final payment of about seventy million euros. It closed a debt created by a war that ended in 1918.
The story is more surprising than the myth. The headline bill of 132 billion gold marks was mostly a political gesture. Hyperinflation had many causes. And after the Second World War, the same victors cut Germany’s old debts in half and tied repayment to its exports.
This video follows John Maynard Keynes’s walkout from the Paris Peace Conference, the Ruhr occupation, the Dawes and Young Plans, the circle of loans between New York, Berlin, London and Paris, and the 1953 London Debt Agreement. To be precise, the 2010 payment was interest on the loans of the 1920s, not reparations in the strict sense.
Sources include the Treaty of Versailles, the Dawes and Young Plans, the London Debt Agreement of 1953, and economic histories of the interwar period.
