Retire in Belize on Social Security: the full cost of living, the QRP retirement visa, and what a house actually costs in the only country in Central America where English is the official language. Belize has 429,000 people in a country the size of Massachusetts. Nineteen people per square kilometer. Almost nobody lives there — and that is exactly why a growing number of American, Canadian and British retirees are moving to Belize instead of Mexico, Panama or Costa Rica. No language barrier. No currency risk, because the Belize dollar has been pegged to the US dollar at two to one since 1978. No bank trust and no coastal restriction on foreign property ownership — you hold the title in your own name, the same as a Belizean citizen. So why is it still empty? I spent weeks on this one. I went through the Qualified Retired Persons program line by line. I read the United States State Department advisory and I quote it word for word in this video, including the two sentences almost nobody repeats. I priced real homes in four different parts of the country, from the northern border to the southern coast. What I found is that there are three real reasons almost nobody lives in Belize, and only one of them is the reason people assume. There is also a number problem that most retirees never see coming. The Belize retirement visa asks for a specific monthly income. The average Social Security check, after Medicare Part B comes out, lands just under it. Just under. In this video I show you four different ways to close that gap on purpose — one of them costs ten months of patience and then pays you for the rest of your life — plus a second route into Belize that has no income requirement at all and that almost nobody talks about. WHAT IS IN THIS VIDEO 00:00 A country the size of Massachusetts with 429,000 people 02:30 The number that decides whether this applies to you 06:00 Corozal — and the nine miles that change everything 12:00 The two doors into Belize, and why most people pick the wrong one 17:00 Cayo and San Ignacio — land, altitude, and a build cost that surprised me 21:00 Hopkins — the beachfront nobody is filming yet 25:00 Healthcare, policing and hurricanes: the honest answers 30:00 Ambergris Caye — the one I would tell most retirees to skip, and why WHY THIS CHANNEL IS DIFFERENT Every figure in this video was checked against a primary or named source before it went in. When a destination does not work on a Social Security check, the video says so out loud. When something could not be verified, the video says that too — there is one open question in here that I flag on camera and tell you to put in writing to a Belizean attorney before you pay anybody a deposit. That is the whole editorial policy. No dream without the fine print. Next video: the countries where an American can still buy legal beachfront property in their own name — with a deed, no bank trust, no fifty-year lease, no local partner holding the title. There are fewer of them than you would think, and two of the most popular retirement destinations in the Americas are not on the list.
