Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. A significant coastal urban area in the Mediterranean, Athens is also the capital of the Attica region and is the southernmost capital on the European mainland. With its urban area's population numbering over 3.6 million, it is the eighth-largest urban area in the European Union (EU). The Municipality of Athens (also City of Athens), which constitutes a small administrative unit of the entire urban area, had a population of 643,452 in 2021,[4] within its official limits, and a land area of 38.96 square kilometres (15.04 square miles).[7][8] Athens joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2016. The Acropolis of Athens(Ancient Greek: Ἡ Ἀκρόπολις τῶν Ἀθηνῶν, romanized: Hē Akropolis tōn Athēnōn; Modern Greek: Η Ακρόπολη των Αθηνών, romanized: I Akrópoli ton Athinón) is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens, Greece, and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word Acropolisis from Greek ἄκρον(akron) 'highest point, extremity' and πόλις(polis) 'city'.[1] The term acropolis is generic and there are many other acropoleis in Greece. During ancient times the Acropolis of Athens was also more properly known as Cecropia (Κεκροπία), after the legendary serpent-man Cecrops, the supposed first Athenian king. The Panagía Kapnikaréa Church is one of the oldest and most significant Byzantine Greek Orthodox churches in Athens, Greece, located directly in the middle of the pedestrian Ermou Street shopping district. Built around 1050–1052 AD (11th century), likely over the ruins of an older ancient Greek temple dedicated to Athena or Demeter. The Church of the Pantanassa (Greek: Εκκλησία της Παντανάσσης), also known as the Dormition of the Theotokos (Ιερός Ναός Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου), is the 10th-century katholikon of a now-vanished monastery in Monastiraki Square, between Athinas and Mitropoleos streets, facing the Monastiraki station, in central Athens, Greece. The church was known as the Great Monastery,[1] and then later as monastiraki ("little monastery"), which eventually became the name of the whole area Excerpts from AI overview and Wikipedia DISCLAIMER: No infringement is intended for the background music.
