Black Wednesday | What media freedom means today

Black Wednesday will be observed tomorrow . It's a day that reminds South Africans of the price paid for the freedom to report, question and speak truth to power. In 1977, newspapers were banned and journalists were detained by the apartheid state. Almost 50 years later, media freedom faces a very different set of challenges misinformation, political landscapes shifting, social media and AI, this as South Africans prepare for the 2026 local government elections. So, what can we learn from Black Wednesday, and how can voters protect themselves from being misled? Black Wednesday reminds us that when information is controlled, is weakened. Media freedom is Nb.
