Built between 1939 and 1944, these 6×4 heavy-duty tractors became essential workhorses of the Second World War, towing artillery, hauling supplies, and rescuing vehicles from the battlefield. The BY3, introduced in 1939, featured an 8.9-liter EN244 petrol engine producing 105 horsepower and 470 newton meters of torque, capable of towing artillery pieces weighing up to 6 tons. Its 4-speed gearbox with a 2-speed transfer case, sturdy chassis, and rear winch made it one of the most reliable machines in the field. By 1941, Albion engineers unveiled the BY5 — a refined and more powerful version producing 115 horsepower and 490 newton meters of torque. It featured a reinforced frame, improved braking, and a stronger winch system. Both trucks shared the same DNA — ruggedness, dependability, and the ability to survive the harshest conditions from North Africa’s deserts to Europe’s muddy battlefields. Although overshadowed by the Scammell Pioneer and AEC Matador, the Albion BY-series proved vital to Britain’s war effort — a testament to Scottish engineering and wartime ingenuity.
