Everyone knows the phrase. Almost no one knows what comes four verses later. If you have ever had someone quote Matthew 7.1 at you to shut down a conversation, this study is for you.
Jesus never said close your eyes to sin in someone else's life. He said clean yours first. The difference between those two readings is the difference between a verse that walls people off and a passage that actually teaches you how to love someone whose life has something wrong in it.
The Greek word behind "judge" in Matthew 7.1 is krino, a courtroom word that stretches from "tell the difference" all the way to "deliver the final sentence." Luke's parallel passage swaps in an even harder word, katakrino, which means to condemn all the way down into a verdict. That is the flavor Jesus forbids , the final sentence passed on a soul by someone who was never handed the case.
The plank and the speck are not about avoiding the conversation. They are a sequence. Deal with your own eye. Then come close, gently, and help. The passage ends at your brother's eye , not with a wall, but with one careful hand and a splinter finally out.
📖 KEY VERSE
