What is Day of the Dead? Where does it come from? Is it the same as Halloween? (It is not!)
This is a slow, clear video for children who are learning English. Our mascot explains Día de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday on 1 and 2 November when many families remember loved ones who have died. We look at the altar (ofrenda) with its photos, candles, food and sweet bread (pan de muerto), the orange marigolds and petal paths, monarch butterflies, paper banners (papel picado), colourful sugar skulls (calaveras) and face paint, and a night of flowers, stories and music at the cemetery.
Every new word has a picture, the spelling on screen, a slow clear model and an example sentence. Children say a Spanish word at 1:50, play a memory game at 4:31, and answer a question at 5:21.

For teachers and parents: beginner to lower-intermediate, ages 6 to 10. British English (colour, favourite). The narration describes what families do and keeps to simple, widely accepted history. For many families the holiday also has a spiritual meaning: they welcome the souls of loved ones home. The video leaves beliefs for families and teachers to talk about in their own way. It says plainly that the people being remembered "have died", and that the day can hold a little sadness as well as love and colour. Customs differ from family to family and region to region, and not every family keeps the holiday.
Speaking practice after the video: "My favourite food is ...", "I remember ...", "This is a photo of my ...".
