She thought she was caring for her sick husband. She never expected his final accusation to put her own life in danger.
In Cause for Alarm!, Loretta Young stars as Ellen Jones, a devoted wife whose husband George has become seriously ill and increasingly suspicious. Confined to his bed with a heart condition, George begins to believe that Ellen and his doctor, Ranney Grahame, are secretly conspiring against him.
But George doesn't keep his suspicions to himself.
He writes a letter to the authorities accusing Ellen and Dr. Grahame of plotting to murder him. Believing the letter contains ordinary correspondence, Ellen unknowingly gives it to the postman.
Then everything changes.
George reveals what he has done, and the situation becomes even more dangerous when his health suddenly collapses. When George dies, Ellen realizes that the incriminating letter is already on its way—and that investigators could interpret it as evidence that she was responsible for his death.
Now Ellen has a desperate problem: she must find a way to recover the letter before it reaches the authorities.
What follows is a tense race against time as an ordinary suburban afternoon becomes a nightmare of suspicion, fear, and desperation. Every person Ellen encounters could potentially bring her closer to the truth—or closer to being accused of a crime she didn't commit.
Directed by Tay Garnett and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1951, Cause for Alarm! stars Loretta Young, Barry Sullivan, and Bruce Cowling. The film runs approximately 73–75 minutes and uses Young's voice-over narration to tell the story from Ellen's perspective.
This classic suspense thriller combines film noir atmosphere, psychological tension, mistaken accusations, and a race against time into a remarkably compact story.
Watch Cause for Alarm! and discover whether Ellen can retrieve the letter before her husband's accusations turn her into the prime suspect.
