The meeting served as an introductory session for the Second Language Acquisition Learning course, led by professor Jose Fernandez Navarro.
He introduced himself as an experienced English teacher and university professor and explained the course structure, which includes 15 theoretical classes and five revision sessions.
He clarified that while he teaches all groups, only Group 10's assignments are corrected by him, while another teacher handles the other groups. Professor Fernandez outlined the evaluation system, consisting of continuous assessment (40%) and an exam (60%), and emphasized the importance of completing assignments as they mirror exam questions.
He presented key vocabulary for the course, including L1, L2, EFL, error analysis, formal instruction, input, interaction, interlanguage, negotiation of meaning, proficiency, teacher talk, baby talk, and parent talk.
The class watched a video on the differences between language acquisition and conscious learning, which Professor Fernandez then explained in detail, highlighting the roles of implicit and explicit memory, incidental and intentional learning, and the concept of comprehensible input.
The session also covered the history of English in Europe, the role of English as a lingua franca, and the use of English as a medium of instruction and in CLIL programs.
Students participated by sharing their backgrounds and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of CLIL.
