The Forth Bridge, a cantilever railway bridge across the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh, was built between 1882 and 1890 to a design by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker. It replaced a design by Thomas Bouch that was abandoned after his Tay Bridge collapsed, and when it opened it had the longest single cantilever span in the world.
This episode follows the ferries and false starts, the lessons of the Tay, the design in steel, the building of the piers and cantilevers, the opening and the bridge's long life since.
