Claude Hooks explained for the CCDV-F exam: a Claude Code hook is a command Claude Code runs automatically at a lifecycle event, so it enforces a rule where a prompt or CLAUDE.md line is only advice; to block a destructive command, use a PreToolUse hook that exits with code 2 or returns a deny decision (exit 1 does not block), and remember that deny and ask rules still apply when a hook says allow, a blocking hook beats an allow rule, and hooks should be layered with permissions, sandboxing and least privilege.
Claude Hooks carries 1.0% of the Claude Certified Developer Foundations (CCDV-F) exam weight, in Domain 7: Security and Safety (8.1%).
This exam-prep deep dive is for developers preparing for the Claude Certified Developer Foundations (CCDV-F) exam who want more than the short Claude Hooks lesson. It covers why a hook is enforcement where an instruction is advice, the main lifecycle events, where hooks are configured and the workspace trust rules, the exit-code rule, structured allow, deny, ask and defer decisions, how hooks interact with permission rules and permission modes, a worked example that blocks a destructive shell command, and why hooks must be combined with other security layers. It is an independent study video, not official Anthropic material, and the practice questions are original.
What you will learn:
• Why a hook enforces a rule while a prompt or CLAUDE.md line is only advice
• The main hook events, and why PostToolUse cannot undo an action
• Where hooks are configured, and how workspace trust applies
• The exit-code rule: exit 2 blocks, exit 1 does not
• Structured allow, deny, ask and defer decisions, and which one wins
• How hooks and permission rules combine: tighten, never loosen
• A worked example: a pre-tool hook that blocks rm -rf
• Why hooks need permissions, sandboxing and least privilege alongside them
