Does marriage kill love? An imagined conversation between Krishnamurti and Osho looks for where the cage really is. It asks whether love dies because of marriage itself, or because of what two people carry into it, and what their child learns just by watching. It opens on a couple twenty years married who eat dinner every night without a word. Osho argues that everybody should get divorced and that children belong to the whole community, growing up with many uncles and aunts instead of one quarrelling pair. Should everyone get divorced? Should children be raised by the community instead of their parents? Krishnamurti agrees with much of the diagnosis and goes further: if parents really loved their children, he says, there would be no wars. Along the way: a wife who keeps a scorebook of every old hurt, a son who grows up to slam the door exactly like his father, and a hard look at what we mean when we say "I love you". Do kids copy their parents' marriage? Would living together without marriage change anything? Krishnamurti, as he spoke in 1974: a grave, patient questioner who traces every problem back to thought and the self. Osho, in his last Pune years in 1989: a provocative mystic who turns the obvious upside down and lands each point with a joke.
