What is the difference between an ordinary derivative and a partial derivative?
Initially, the notation looks almost identical. But once we move from one dimension into higher-dimensional spaces, everything changes.
In this video, we start with the ordinary derivative and gradually move into multivariable calculus. We explore what it really means to "freeze" variables, how partial derivatives work, and how a function can change differently depending on the direction we move through it.
Then we take this idea onto a 3D surface.
From there, we introduce the gradient vector, tangent directions, directional derivatives, and the dot product.
We’ll see exactly what θ represents, why the dot product can be positive, zero, or negative, and why moving perpendicular to the gradient produces no change in height.
Finally, we extend the idea into higher dimensions and see how the same principle leads naturally to partial differential equations.
