America’s “Ventura Highway” is one of the most transportive and breezy masterpieces of early 1970s soft-rock. Released in 1972 on their second studio album, "Homecoming", the song was written by group member Dewey Bunnell and became a major smash, climbing to #8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and solidifying the band's signature acoustic-driven style. Dewey Bunnell wrote "Ventura Highway" inspired by a childhood memory of his family's car flat-tire mishap on US Route 101 in California, where he caught a glimpse of the actual Ventura Freeway sign. Even though he had never spent much time there, the name captured his imagination and evoked a sun-drenched, carefree vision of the California coast, complete with alligator lizards in the air and a permanent summer feeling.
