After a banquet held in Judith's honor, the Assyrian general Holofernes, overcome by wine, falls into a drunken sleep. Believing his master safely at rest, Vagaus respectfully leaves Judith alone with the sleeping general. As he departs, he sings the exquisite lullaby "Umbrae carae, aurae adoratae" ("Beloved shadows, adored breezes"), invoking gentle shadows and soft breezes to preserve Holofernes' peaceful slumber. Accompanied by the delicate obbligato of two recorders, the aria creates an atmosphere of enchanting serenity.
