Verse 1
Cardboard corners and a thousand shades of blue
Spread across the table, waiting for a clue.
I’m sorting out the edges, building up the frame
Playing a quiet, solitary game.
There’s a pattern in the chaos, a shape within the mess
A million little fragments of a giant mental guess.
Verse 2
Hours turn to shadows as the border starts to hold
The colors bleed together, stories starting to unfold.
I find a piece of sweater, a sliver of a chair
A familiar-looking tangle of some dark and messy hair.
The image is a mirror, rising from the wood
I’m building back a moment exactly where I stood.
Chorus
And it’s piece by piece, line by line
Watching the dimensions and the details intertwine.
A recursive little riddle, a loop that never ends
Where the person in the picture and the builder both are friends.
Yeah, the picture on the box is the scene right here tonight
Just a piece of the puzzle of a puzzle in the Night.
Verse 3
The table in the drawing has a puzzle on it, too
With a tiny little version of a person just like you.
I’m reaching for the center, my heartbeat starts to rise
As I lock into the vision of my own reflected eyes.
One gap remains wide open, a hollow in the chest
The final bit of cardboard to put the ghost to rest.
Bridge
Is it art or is it memory? Is it glass or is it ink?
It gives me far too much time to sit around and think.
Am I the one who’s looking, or the one who’s being made?
Just a flat and glossy finish that is never gonna fade.
