The first part of the album brings together five works by Silvestre Fonseca, a Portuguese composer whose music combines the classical guitar tradition with influences from fado and other forms of popular music. The second part is devoted to J. S. Bach’s Partita No. 3 in E major, BWV 1006 for solo violin performed entirety on the guitar. Rather than simply placing two different musical worlds side by side, the album explores what happens when these two ways of making and experiencing music pass through the same performer. The spontaneity, melodic sensibility and freedom of rhythm associated with his Portuguese roots meet the architecture and discipline of Bach’s music, and, in that encounter, each world ends up changing the way the other is heard. At its heart, Alma – Seele is an intimate portrait of a life shaped between two cultures: music that comes from one’s roots, and music that has become part of one’s journey.
