On payday in many Japanese homes, the husband hands his whole salary to his wife, and she gives him back a small monthly allowance. It is called okozukai, pocket money. Priya and Ravi both earn, spend from one UPI account and argue every month on the 20th. So Priya tried the Japanese idea for three months.
In this video:
• What okozukai is and what the husband's pocket money has to cover
• The yearly pocket money survey: about ¥77,725 a month in 1990, about ¥39,081 in 2024 (roughly ₹24,000)
• Idea 1: one person owns the household accounts
• Idea 2: household money and personal money stay apart, and the wife gets pocket money too
• Idea 3: on salary day every rupee gets a job, savings first
• The honest downsides of the Japanese system
• Hesokuri, a Japanese wife's secret savings, and why it sounds like our popula dabba
• Priya's three months: what changed at home
Sources: the salaryman pocket money survey run every year since 1979 by Shinsei Bank (now SBI Shinsei Bank); Meiji Yasuda Life's survey of married couples' secret savings. Not every Japanese home works this way. Today many couples manage money together, and the system has real problems too. This video is general information about a household custom, not financial advice.
